Brookline seeks an Assistant Assessor – Residential/Commercial to support the valuation and assessment of all real and personal property. Responsibilities include reviewing market trends and data, collecting data from local boards, identifying exempt properties, and processing abatement and exemption applications, maintaining assessment systems, and supporting the Board of Assessors. The Assistant Assessor supervises staff involved in residential exemptions, personal property valuation, and field inspections.
This position also assists in valuing residential, commercial, industrial, and personal property; prepares annual valuation updates; and supports tax rate setting through posting, balancing, and reconciling data. The role helps prepare materials for the annual classification hearing, Appellate Tax Board cases, and other reports requested by the Board. Additional duties include updating property record files, maintaining data systems, responding to public inquiries about assessments, and overseeing motor vehicle excise billing.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field, and three to five years of appraisal or assessing experience, or a combination of education and experience are required, along with a valid driver’s license. Must have Massachusetts Accredited Assessor designation or eligibility within two years.
Starting salary range: $91,947–$96,945 DOQ with excellent benefits.
