The town of Ayer is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Mechanic for the department of Public Works (DPW) Highway division. The Highway Division is responsible for maintaining approximately 50 miles of roads, mowing public areas, snow removal, and maintaining stormwater systems. This position is primarily responsible for maintenance and repair work on gas and diesel vehicles, trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes and other DPW vehicles and equipment.
Desired qualifications include a high school education supplemented by one year of technical or vocational training; five years’ experience as a mechanic performing gas, diesel and hydraulic repair work; however, any equivalent combination of education and experience. The following licenses shall be possessed or obtained during a probationary period: CDL B, Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer’s License (Hydraulics), and 4G Hoisting/Flailing. The town offers reimbursement of license-related fees.
FY26 pay rate up to $34.18 per hour (includes license increments). Overtime pay available. Stipends available for boots and clothing. Regular work hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Winter) and 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Summer).
