Brookline seeks a mission‑driven Preservation Planner to help protect and celebrate the community’s historic character while supporting thoughtful, sustainable growth. This role is ideal for a preservation professional passionate about architecture, cultural resources, and public service.
The Preservation Planner administers the town’s Local Historic Districts, Neighborhood Conservation Districts, and Demolition Delay bylaw. Responsibilities include reviewing applications for exterior alterations and demolitions, preparing materials for public hearings, advising residents and developers, and conducting site visits to evaluate the architectural and historical significance of structures. The position also supports the Preservation Commission through meeting preparation and minutes, advances public education initiatives such as walking tours and publications, helps maintain the town’s Certified Local Government status, and contributes to National Register evaluations, environmental reviews, and grant writing.
This role blends planning, policy administration, research, and community engagement—well suited for someone who thrives in both fieldwork and public meetings.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience required; Master’s degree preferred. Strong knowledge of preservation regulations, architectural history, plan review, and stakeholder communication is essential. Valid driver’s license required.
Salary: $78,713–$89,060 plus excellent benefits.
