The Massachusetts Municipal Personnel Association is once again offering a six-day Supervisory Leadership Development Program for local government managers and employees.

The interactive learning opportunity is for municipal employees interested in developing or strengthening their supervisory and management skills.

The training program will be held at MarketStreet in Lynnfield from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on March 3 and from 9 a.m. to noon on March 10 and 31, April 7 and 28, and May 12.

The program represents a collaboration of the MMPA, the Collins Center for Public Management at UMass Boston, and the Department of Workplace Learning and Development at UMass Amherst.

The program is adapted from a UMass supervisory training program for the state’s higher education system and is customized for local governments.

The key trainers for the program are Dr. Linda Marchesani and Margaret Arsenault from the Department of Workplace Learning and Development.

The course will focus on managing self, managing others, managing the work, and managing the system. It will cover communication, team building, organization, delegation, coaching and performance management, labor relations, and supervising in a unionized environment.

The class-style program is open to any municipal staff or manager interested in developing or strengthening his or her management or supervisory skills. It is applicable to many municipal departments, such as administration, conservation, facilities, finance, human resources, public safety, and public works.

A maximum of 27 students may participate, and the cost is $775.

“The MMPA/UMass program provides an excellent opportunity for cities and towns to send managers to a multi-session training at an affordable price,” said Denise Casey, human resources director in Lexington and chair of the MMPA. “I recommend this program to any manager; from the newly hired, first-time supervisor to the manager who has not attended training in some time.”
