Massachusetts Municipal Communicators hosted a virtual meeting on Oct. 22 to discuss effective strategies for translating data into visual graphics.
Kim Lundgren, CEO and founder of Kim Lundgren Associates, defined data visualization as “any visual that turns numbers into something people can see, compare, and act on.” She highlighted the importance of choosing the best visual medium for the intended audience — such as budget books, a website, yard signs, or social media posts — while using clear language to maintain resident trust.
Amesbury Communications Director William Donohue discussed making municipal data visuals accessible by using optimal type sizes, ensuring high color contrast, defining reading orders, and providing alternative text.
The speakers led an interactive activity to test what attendees have learned on data visualization and accessibility.
To end the meeting, Tanner Walling, the assistant to the town manager and communications coordinator in Shrewsbury, facilitated a Q&A between Lundgren, Donohue, and MMC members.
