Safe Routes to School grants available for new school yea

As students head back to school this fall, the Safe Routes to School program is offering several grant opportunities for schools and communities across the state.

• Signs and Lines: This program will reimburse recipients up to $14,000 for regulatory signage and pavement markings on school property and within school zones. Projects must be completed within the same school year as the award. The deadline is Sept. 25.

• Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Grants: This program offers a multi-modal infrastructure grant worth up to $2 million. It includes new sidewalk installation, bike accommodations and design reconfiguration. Completion typically takes four to five years. The deadline is Oct. 16.

• Bike Rack Grants: These grants provide schools with a bike rack, helmets, locks and lights. Bike racks can be located on grass or on concrete pads, and recipients can choose from different colors. The deadline is Nov. 13.

Safe Routes to School also makes technical assistance available year-round, for help with project identification, general application support, relationship-building and cost estimates.

To apply, schools must have been a program partner for at least six months and be active in the program. And where applicable, communities must be in compliance with the MBTA Communities law.
