Nancy Galkowski, the former town manager in Holden and deputy town manager in Arlington, passed away on Feb. 15 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Galkowski, 58, spent 23 years working for the town of Arlington, where she served as deputy town manager, among other positions. In February 2010, she began work as the town manager in Holden, the community where she lived and had begun her professional career in 1977.

She served as president of the Massachusetts Municipal Management Association in 2004 and served on the Board of Directors of the MMA as well as the International City/County Management Association.

When she was diagnosed with cancer last September, her municipal management colleagues organized a large team to participate in the Lustgarten Foundation Annual Walk, which benefits pancreatic cancer research.

Galkowski mentored many young managers during her career. A scholarship fund has been established in her name as a means of helping municipal managers attend high-quality professional development programs. Contributions may be sent to the MMMA, Nancy Galkowski Leadership Legacy Fund, 1 Winthrop Square, Boston, MA 02110.

Galkowski leaves her husband, Larry, and their two sons.
