Shelburne has introduced a “Professional Standards of Conduct” policy for town employees, a step that Selectman Robert Manners described as especially useful for a small community with limited staff.
The one-page policy, which was developed with the help of the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association’s Employee Assistance Program, summarizes what is regarded as proper conduct and lays out the steps to take in dealing with employees who have violated the code. The steps include an initial verbal reprimand, first and second written warnings, suspension, and termination.
“Small towns can’t afford the resources that larger communities and the private sector have,” Manners said. “Being able to tap into this and provide it to our employees is a wonderful asset.”
Manners said he believes that the policy is the first of its kind among Franklin County towns.
“It’s reaffirming the fact that employees should treat people with respect,” Manners said. “We’re able to offer employees help in diffusing situations before they come to a point.”
The policy, he added, should also help guide town employees in dealing with complaints from residents.
