The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs and Massachusetts Department of Transportation are holding a series of four listening sessions this fall to gather input about strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector.

The listening sessions will focus on strategies to reduce transportation sector emissions, increase deployment of zero-emission vehicles, increase the resilience of transportation infrastructure as the climate changes, and design solutions with environmental justice communities in mind.

The sessions are part of the Baker administration’s ongoing efforts on climate change. In September, the administration held a summit to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Gov. Charlie Baker’s executive order on climate change, which mapped out the state’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve resiliency, and protect against the impacts of climate change.

According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the state’s greenhouse gas inventory shows that, as of 2014, the Commonwealth was on track to meet emissions reduction limits of 25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020, with current reductions at 21 percent from the 1990 baseline. Progress so far has been largely driven by emissions reductions in the power sector. The transportation sector now represents the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions in Massachusetts.
