Attleboro Mayor Kevin Dumas is the new president of the MMA, and Orleans Selectman David Dunford is the vice president.
The MMA Board of Directors elected Dumas and Dunford for one-year terms following the association’s Annual Business Meeting in Boston on Jan. 25.
Dumas, who succeeds Needham Town Manager Kate Fitzpatrick as president, was first elected mayor in 2003 at age 27, making him the youngest mayor in Attleboro’s history.
His accomplishments include bringing fiscal stability to a city that had less than $8,000 in free cash when he took office; overseeing the renewal of the city’s downtown; and more than doubling the size of a program that enables seniors to perform community work in exchange for a reduction in their property taxes.
As MMA president, Dumas said an immediate priority is the release of the final $100 million of the $300 million the Legislature allocated to Chapter 90 local road and bridge funding last spring.
“Every dollar makes a difference when it goes to transportation,” Dumas said. “And especially after the winter we’re having, it’s going to be even more difficult to maintain what we have.”
Dumas said he is looking forward to working with mayors, managers, selectmen and councillors to advocate on behalf of other MMA priorities, including pushing for legislation to reform public retiree health insurance benefits.
Dunford joined the Orleans Finance Committee in 2003 and was elected to the Board of Selectmen two years later. He is now in his third term.
Dunford is a member of the executive board of the Cape Cod Selectmen and Councilors’ Association and served as the group’s president in 2010-2011.
A former investment professional, Dunford founded the Bank of Cape Cod in 2006.
