Maureen Flanagan, left, district director for Sen. Michael Rodrigues, Jessica Fidalgo, center, legislative aide for Rep. Steven Ouellette, and Westport Veterans Service Officer Carol Freitas speak during an MMA Legislative Breakfast Meeting on Oct. 23 in Westport.

On three Fridays in October, legislators and local officials from across Massachusetts gathered for six MMA Legislative Breakfast Meetings, held in Great Barrington, Leicester, Lowell, Needham, Northampton and Westport.

The fall meetings featured updates from the MMA Legislative Division on the state revenue picture, fiscal 2027 state budget process, a fiscal 2026 “Fair Share” supplemental budget, the transportation bond bill, and the PROTECT Act, among others. The team also covered ongoing work and developments regarding active conference committee negotiations on key topics: an economic development bill, an environmental bond bill, and energy affordability legislation.

Updates were followed by an opportunity for legislators and local leaders to discuss the many challenges facing municipalities, covering topics such as increasing fiscal pressures, housing, energy regulations, ballot questions, and other issues.

The MMA holds its Legislative Breakfast Meetings around the state each spring and fall to provide an opportunity for local officials to engage in informal discussions with legislators, fellow local officials, and MMA staff. The fall meetings were held on Oct. 16, 23 and 30.

The MMA has hosted 260 breakfast meetings in more than 200 communities since 2007, with a goal of hosting a meeting in each of the state’s 351 cities and towns. Communities that have not hosted an MMA Legislative Breakfast Meeting but would be interested in doing so are asked to contact Abigail Ferrone at [email protected] or 617-426-7272, ext. 130.
