Stan Corcoran
MIIA Executive Vice President Stan Corcoran, who has helped hundreds of cities and towns navigate municipal insurance needs and secure quality coverage through several decades of growth and change, will retire next June after more than 45 years of service with the organization.
Corcoran’s retirement will coincide with the 45th anniversary of MIIA’s founding and the 35th anniversary of MIIA’s Health Benefits Trust.
His announcement will allow MIIA time to retain a consultant to lead a search process for his successor, while ensuring continuity of operations and quality of services to municipal members.
MIIA’s announcement of his retirement on Oct. 26 thanked Corcoran for “setting a standard of excellence we will carry forward for years to come.”
“Stan began his career at the MMA in 1981 as a junior consultant, at a time when MIIA was merely a concept waiting to be realized,” MIIA said. “Over the decades, his leadership, passion, and unwavering commitment have profoundly shaped MIIA and positively impacted cities, towns, and public employees across Massachusetts.”
Corcoran joined the MMA shortly after receiving his master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. He was instrumental in every milestone that took MIIA from an idea to a thriving nonprofit corporation that has brought services into more than 400 cities, towns and public entities. He became MIIA’s executive vice president in 1998.
Following its creation in 1982 as a workers’ compensation insurer, MIIA began offering property and liability insurance in 1984, created the MIIA Health Benefits Trust in 1992, and has expanded its offerings over the years to include popular offerings such as MIIA Wellness, cybersecurity coverage and training, and the Unemployment Services Program.
MIIA’s partnerships with companies including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Aon Risk Services and Cabot Risk have created the operation that’s familiar to member communities throughout the state.
In 1998, Corcoran also took the lead in developing the MMA’s MunEnergy program, which has helped more than 100 cities, towns and other government entities save millions of dollars in energy costs since its inception.
Corcoran is a member of the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities Mutual Insurance Company, and a former chair of the NLC Risk Information Sharing Consortium (NLC-RISC) Board of Directors.
Note: The MMA will publish a more thorough retrospective of Corcoran’s career next month.
